Supply Chain Design S1/E8: 10 Misconceptions in the "Make or Buy" Approach

Supply Chain Design is Cross-Departmental

Technology or flexibility: Which is more important?

In S1/F7 we described the requirements for the tools to design a global supply chain. However, it's not enough to just model. It is also important how these tools are accepted and used by all parties involved.
It is important to support the different organizational levels of suppliers in terms of supply chain nodes. Leverage the experiences of the catuuga Scouts to engage especially small businesses in the metal and plastics sectors in the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, and Slovakia.
Catuuga Scouts train suppliers and supply chain nodes in collaboration with the project planner's work preparation team. Based on bills of materials and work plans, initial project components—known as order networks—are designed and presented to the local work preparation team of the supplier in a straightforward manner.
"Simply" means organizing the individual steps in a sequence, describing them with drawings and specified times, and involving the supplier/system partner concretely and in detail. This results in a widely branched supply chain network that:
  • Makes communication more purposeful
  • Speeds up intervention
  • Documents the solutions thoroughly
  • Makes any redesigns transparent
The key project steps are organized into a sequence in an individually described process flow (approval/start/interruption/resumption/...), and managed in conjunction with a service-level agreement.
This shared understanding is trained and conditioned by the catuuga Scout with all participants. This ensures that all tools are used effectively and the supply chain operates smoothly.
Even though we already have all the tools to manage the supply chain, some claim that these systems are overrated and underestimate human flexibility and decision-making capabilities. Is technology truly the key, or are we overestimating its importance?
